Reach for the stars when buying an appliance
The more stars, the more savings every year
The Energy Rating Label helps you choose appliances wisely by showing two key things: the star rating and energy consumption.
What is the star rating? The star rating shows how energy efficient a product is compared to similar products. More stars mean it's more efficient. The more stars on the Energy Rating Label, the less energy the product uses, leading to savings on your energy bills. Most products have between 1 and 6 stars, but some newer models now have up to 10 stars due to improved technology.
Compare similar appliances. When using star ratings, ensure the appliances are the same size and have similar features. The rating considers both size and features. For instance, a 10 kg washing machine with a five-star rating will consume more energy than a 6 kg washing machine with the same rating.
Energy consumption is the yearly electricity use of a device, measured in kilowatt hours (kWh). This measurement is based on standard tests required by law in Australia and New Zealand, reflecting common usage, but your actual use may differ, leading to varied energy costs. The Energy Rating Label includes estimates on how often you might wash clothes or watch TV. You can use the energy consumption number to compare different models, regardless of size or features.
For air conditioners, check the star rating suitable for your climate zone
Estimate your running costs
You can estimate the running cost of an appliance by using its energy consumption number with this formula.
Annual running cost = Total energy consumption (kWh) × Electricity tariff (dollars per kWh)
For example, if a fridge has an energy consumption of 558 kWh and your electricity tariff is $0.32 per kWh — then the estimated annual running cost is $178.56 (558 kWh x $0.32).
You can find your electricity tariff in the service calculation section of your electricity bill. Check out the Tariff page for more information.
Check the water rating stars too. The more stars, the more savings!
TIP
First choose the size and features you need from an appliance, then use the star rating to compare makes and models.
